In 2000 Ana Maiques was one of the founders of Starlab, a leading research and innovation company based in Barcelona focused on the space and neuroscience industries. Her husband, PhD in Physics and a mathematician from the University of California in Berkeley, accompanied her in this entrepreneurial adventure as another founder.
The business tandem positioned Starlab as one of the leading companies in research in Spain. They were awarded a number of prizes: Flyer best space company, NOVARE ENDESA Prize, Innovative Company Award by the Barcelona Council, BMW Awards and the recognition of the European Space Agency.
Besides her business experience she also proactively participates in various organisations in her community: VP of CataloniaBio, Barcelona Council Growth Bureau, Entrepreneurship Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona and GrupSet Women Entrepreneurs from Catalonia.
Ana’s main challenges are to prove that science can be a business model, to give scientists back their important role in society and to convince the companies to invest in long-term research.
In 2010 she was nominated by IESE as one of the most influential entrepreneurs under 40 in Spain (the only woman in the list) and in March 2014 recognised as one of the most Innovative Women in Europe by the European Commission.
Ana is now leading a new business adventure, Neuroelectrics, a Starlab spin-off. It aims to become the trusted leader in Brain Health by providing measurement tools and making neuromodulation affordable and available for every patient in need. In 2015, Neuroelectrics was crowned the winner of the Bupa Startup Stage at WIRED Health and Geektime.com named Neuroelectrics the number 1 Spanish start-up in 2015.
She keeps working to expand her businesses globally and hopes her experience will be useful as a benchmark for other young entrepreneurs.
Ana was featured in Inspiring Fifty: Europe 2015.
